in the novel back in her kidnapping arc with the empress, he ended up saving the empress instead (by mistake?) so basically the trial she went through in the kidnapping was really bad esp since she lost hope that he might have feelings for her
so when she was saved she became very tired and just done and gave up her feelings and decided to go back to her home country
so in the novel he basically kept trying to woo her just like she did him at the start (i think he told her to give him 100 days as well or someth before she leaves and it ended up being only 1 month) while she kept rejecting and not meeting with him, so he went on that flower journey to prove his love for her
