I think it’s far deeper and more serious than it seems on the surface.
My guess I’d that the puppet-master and the REAL evil lady is actually Erika!
She may be a one-man-army, but it is more likely that she is some other person, faction or organization’s agent; who’s main job isn’t just manipulating the princess, but to forego a grand scheme in the power system.
And, why doesn’t she tell the duke about the original FL’s abilities and her intentions of wanting to marry him?!
This way everythings resolved and the duke won’t be bothering her anymore.
I don’t understand why she has kept stupidly quiet when the duke is listening to her now!
