In a way the yellow rose guy sure is pitiful. But we all saw how the female lead lived in that prison under his watch when he was “her” chief warden – her cold cell and plank bed there were certainly not good for anybody’s health.
So if Renald (formerly called Renage, Renard, etc.) really loved her so much, he should not just have allowed her some small special favors, but first he should have made sure that her living circumstances would not endanger her health.
I agree with that to a certain extent. It’s obvious that Renard should have look after her better at Kambrakam but, after reading the novel, you can see the reasons behind their actions and they are pretty well supported, so I don’t judge him, Renard is a very pittiful character in my eyes.
