I think the point of the scene was to show the ML that the FL is willing to die for her step-son. I would have preferred her or the child managing to fight back somehow though.
I hate this trope SO much! Why do story writers always think up of some totally irrational situations just so that the male lead (and not anybody else, no guards, hunters, gardeners etc.) can show up out of nowhere and save the female lead JUST in the nick of time?
I at least hope for an explanation why this magical beast decided to hunt down Sirius and our heroine, but not anybody else, and also has never been seen before this moment in the forest or by someone from the nearby estate of Lord Robert before?
