I think the guy never once suspected her but knew damn well her father would make a battleground of her even if he didn’t go on a bloody rampage dismantling the existing landed aristocracy. couple that knowledge with his family history… i mean, he was real close to his grandmother but says outright that she was forced into a marriage she didn’t want for political reasons. he knows just as well that his own wife was chosen for political reasons. he’s assuming she doesn’t even want to be there and will be made to suffer for staying, and all that’s in the best case scenario. worst case scenario, she gets outright murdered for power. i’d want to find a way to get the target off her back, too

From what I can guess he left her either because he was lead to believe that sharing had a part in her father’s plans which would understandably break his heart, or to protect her.
