We learn knowledge in school, but we never learnt how to be a “good” child, friend, student, partner, spouse, parent in school. Therefore, we can only learn by doing and learn from our mistakes.
You may say that he’s a terrible husband and father, yes, because he never learnt how to show love and care for others, since he never received love and care from anyone anywhere since he was a child.
Therefore, he worked hard to earn money to provide for his family by going to war, and tried his best to save his wife, as these are the only ways of “love” and “care” that he knows.
