They were still young when orphaned. Most magic systems require both innate ability and education. Some even have minimum age requirements for getting started.
As homeless orphans, how would they learn that stuff? Especially with their family’s possessions either confiscated or destroyed.
My question is: why didn’t the parents cast more than one spell on them? Or direct them to a family friend? Or accompany them at least part of the way to safety? Or anything besides die, really.
