wait , why he should be a hero or a villain?XD he’s doing what’s needed to survive.
To be a hero you die, as you cannot trust people in a situation like that.
To be a villain would be a useless waste of energy and you would run out of bullets etc very fast.
So i think the direction he is going is pretty fair.
And after you kill 1 person or 10 person from that to 1000 what does it change? you wont feel more or less guilty, humans can get used to everything. I mean just think about it, when they starve they actually eat each others, it actually happened in real life many times in history.
