She’s been told her whole life, implicitly and explicitly, that she isn’t capable of achieving anything great and that she should know her place. Even so, she managed to remain ambitious. The only problem was that she didn’t see her own potential even though she had ambition. Even from the start she had a curious mind that wanted to learn, judging from her reading that book and missing the meeting with the king. Deep down inside she actually thinks the book is more important than becoming a concubine but she thought that being a concubine was the best she could achieve with her abilities.
