I don’t think the author did redeem him. In the novel, not even after knowing the truth was he able to patch things up with his daughter. She doesn’t feel any yearning nor hatred towards him, he’s basically just a stranger to her when he was wallowing in regret. The most painful thing you could inflict on someone is to treat them with indifference and reject.
