I think it was a ruse to get the guards out and have it look as if the Duke was letting his daughter get tortured while he went to find out who poisoned the princess. If we look at the relationships now, Max and her father were allies, the emporer hates her father cause he’s(her father) stronger blah blah blah. She misunderstood the situation and acted like she always did.
Nvm the gaps in logic in these misunderstandings, the fact the dad gets detailed reports that his daughter misses him is hard to believe when the intro shows her asking for him althroughout her life….
From what I’ve been putting together I don’t think her father wanted her to kill herself. I think he was taking that opportunity to overthrow the king. Max was sent to protect her.
