They’re all shocked because, up until this point, Psyche hasn’t been treated as a princess of the family by either her relatives or the servants. She’s been disregarded and mistreated so everyone expects him to cast her aside now that his “real” daughter has returned. (He doesn’t need her anymore and obviously doesn’t love her so why would he keep her around and even give her a title on par with Lilian’s?)
