The wait for the duke to annul the engagement could be cuz a majority of society in the story have the idea that a woman’s purpose is to only bear children and server her husband, so divorce is looked down upon, annulment like is as when it comes to women. Heck, annulment may be something in which she can’t do on her own, it may require the duke’s permission or has to be granted by a judge like a divorce and seeing as women in working positions are frowned upon there, the judge could be a man who has the same mindset as others that she should just suck up and serve her husband no matter what.

The guy is a complete idiot obviously and he will get more desperate for her because the blondie he has been sleeping with has 0 skills and he has 0 skills in running the duchy.
