I really like this story, but if we’re all being honest, no one in it is exactly a perfect person, including Penelope. They’re all flawed characters with pretty low emotional intelligence. It’s really about using those around them to protect or benefit themselves, and each character does that in this book. I might not like everyone, but I do understand them. It’s all about saving a crule world that wasn’t kind to Penelope but also realizing she was crule back.
Those people in the comments are forgetting winterr is leaving the kids to leila who he raised coz he’s afraid to face leila broo just because he loves Penelope doesn’t mean he is good ????!!! He helped Penelope many times but that does not give you the excuse to leave kids who trusted you with your life becomes you’re a coward!!!!

there is one more way to save the children. risky but might work. remember how that leila switched hostages from her brother to father? there was no apparent reason to Not devour the brother, unless either the brother is still has some use to her or she has some limitations on how or when she can devour something. She can use the same method to save children.
But rationally speaking, It is not worth risking more to save the children. nomatter how cruel it maybe because consider this – if children are in leila control, there is good chance that they are already devoured by her. plus even if they are alive she will use the children as a wager against any move Protagnist makes. Risking the entire world for few children who are possibly already dead, seems rather stupid decision to me. peace🫰
