If you’ve been friends for a long time and the other one has someone s/he likes— it would be a gamble to confess. I wouldn’t risk our friendship for a mere confession. Especially if I can see how the other person’s eye sparkle just by hearing the name of the person s/he like.
No wonder she doesn’t notice him. He’s such a coward and doesn’t realize the turmoil he’s putting her in by allowing their engagement to go thru. It’s like everyone in the novel misses the critical POINT which causes these problems.
