I’m glad this scene is not like other unrealistic historical novels these days. Here Matthias didn’t help her and confused Riette and Claudine and us readers too but he actually did good by not helping her in public. Layla forgot her pain after she saw Claudine and Matthias together. Layla also wouldn’t want to interact with him in front of Claudine, because it’s obvious she’s leaving arvis and uncle bill just to protect herself and her feelings as she doesn’t want to drown in guilt of interacting with someone’s fiancée and BE THE TALK OF THE TOWN. If Claudine gets to know that Matthias’s feelings for Layla are not just desire and that he has deep feelings for her hidden, she would get scared of losing her duchess place and would bully Layla. SO IN my Opinion, he did the best thing he could do for Layla here. Noone can read Matthias’s face and decipher his emotions unless he wants them to know.
This was my least favorite part in the novel. Matthias didn’t want to show emotions for Laylas sake. He did tend to her wounds in private but this was Riettes lowest point in the novel. Moving forward, Riette started distancing himself from Matthias and Laylas “relationship” and even advised Claudine to stop interfering but she wouldn’t listen. Riette ended up apologizing to Layla later on.
If you read the novel you’ll understand that if he shows affection or any emotional gest then everyone would believe she’s involved with him ….it was more for Layla reputation
so basically Matthias didn’t show emotion because then that will show Riette and Claudine that they been right, so he basically saved Layla and will tend her wounds later in private, Layla didn’t want no one to notice Matthias and her anyways so he did it for her ….that’s what this chapter ment you can tell Riette felt bad after seeing her cry and Matthias was pretty pissed but he acted and smiled…. he couldn’t do anything … not right now that is, later he wont give a shit what anyone thinks so for now hes doing it for layla
