he was only a reasonable candidate for the throne because they were married. she’s the only legitimate child of the emperor, which stands a good chance of putting the duke much higher in the line of succession than he would have been if married literally anyone else. the mom kills him off only because she’s taking care of any threats to the son’s ascension. so no, marrying her is the only thing painting a target on his back.
