You know, unlike them (it’s possible that the divine beasts know as well), that they are the twins that were born. We don’t know why Areyu turned into a demon, although I can give a guess, it is said that twins who are separated (this is the case of multiple births as well), they feel a void that cannot be filled. The best way they describe it is that it feels like a piece of themselves is missing. A good example of this is Elvis Presley. He was a twin. His brother died soon after childbirth and he had always said he felt as if he was living the life his twin brother should have lived. Anyway, due to this void, it stands to reason that Areyu began to devour beings in an attempt to fill it. In his quest, he came across Ran. Yes, he had wished to devour her, once again trying to fill the void and more than likely once he met her, it was filled though just as he said, he doesn’t understand why. He wanted that question to be answered. Yes, it seems, especially in those last panels, that they had fallen in love, which was why he did what he was about to do. Destroy the world that hurt the one being he cares deeply about. The brother/sister angle gives us the willies, but they don’t know so we cannot look at it through that lens. As far as Areyu is concerned, the woman he loves was not only shunned by her world but they keep attempting to kill her. That drives his hatred of everyone. In his twisted way, he is doing this to avenge her but also it’s his own revenge for losing the sister he never knew existed.
