One of the most embarrassing things is that I grew up in the US and no one ever told me that saying forms of “you” instead of saying people’s names was rude. No one uses names like that in my native country.
So for my childhood to my 20s, I was talking people from Japan rudely when also speaking Japanese, but it’s rude to correct people, so NO ONE EVER TOLD ME.
Eventually I just figured it out. Meanwhile I hear if I had been speaking Korean to Korean people, they’d have torn my head off for the offense.
Ah cultural differences.
