This dialog feels so contrived, I’m sure everyone in the story is clever and there is a very good reason for this and all that but… but If he didn’t want to marry her sister and it would be better for his plans if he married someone disabled why offer to marry her sister in the first place. What was he going to do if the sister said yes? What if the sister said that he was the father? This just feels off, it doesn’t feel organic, maybe if we got a little more internal dialog from the characters so we could see their thought processes it would feel more natural

As far as I know he’s not marrying her out of love. Right now he find her amusing in a way she try to resist to be true to her believes.
The main reason for him to wed into Verdiers are resources he found in woods on the estate.
