I don’t think the emperor having a mistress was of his own will.. he clearly misses Rebecca, and as we’ve seen, he hasn’t brought in another empress after her, not even the mistress since otherwise the new empress would have handled palace funding instead of the head maid. The high priest and amaryllis have been referred to as inhuman so it’s very much possible some sort of dark magic could have been used to mess with the heads of the royal family. No need to manipulate ashtarte if the rest of the royal family isolates her and she is left to be miserable and her light slightly diminish. Instead, he can manipulate the royal family via whatever magic was used but amaryllis is also now seen as an official princess regardless of her origin, she would probably have a stake in the throne and also her presence may exude a spell that maintains the magic that caused the royal family to isolate ashtarte. Seeing as everyone started to change upon encountering ashtarte and we’re also told by the high priest to avoid the empress palace. It’s very possible that he knew that meeting ashtarte could disrupt the magic that was meant to manipulate even a royal family consisting of people who would have holy power.
I mean the empress did hide a very important matter from him and instead of even trying to communicate she used an excuse to not even attempt. SMH. She has her own responsibility for the harm to her child.

As a human and parent yes, but may I remind you that he is a RULER… and often in real life, everything takes second place to it… also, remember, in this setting – the church had tremendous power
Third – the church is evil, since they have enough power to even move politics and the emperor and empire… seems obvious they want total control? Or something else… haven’t figured that one out…

I wonder if the other daughter knows of the priest plans of is also being used… while she is truly despicable, she is also the product of circumstances… image what would all those praises, putting someone in a pedestal and also in a powerful position protected by the church and empire would do to a persons ego… much less to the ego of a child that is developing…
