I feel like layard only had the marriage to appease family bugging him about marriage and succession.. also I’m guessing the story is set with the thing of olden times where men having mistresses was seen as normal and the wives were seen as less than equal. Tho you’d think that since the dude is getting with noble daughters, the parents would be opposing the relationships as it can disrupt their hopes of their daughters getting married cuz of the old timey idea that a bride must be pure. Tho also wouldn’t be surprised if part the reason all the women are willing to get with his likely std ridden ass is that he might be telling them that the marriage is merely that of a contract so these ladies can be like “ooo so ai have a chance to be the next countess!”. While count isn’t like a marquis or duke, it does seem, according to one of the no name characters, that the count of cloette is a big figure in the imperial faction and so likely holds a good big of power and wealth to him despite his title.
the reason this ugly fucker keeps cheating shamelessly is because he knows that no one will ever hold him accountable for his actions. That’s the reason he married and fucks poor people. They can’t say or do anything to stop him, he’ll just keep on spreading his seed far and wide until someone finally decides to castrate him.
