I think her fat and evil uncle spread those rumors about her, along with that blonde, and the crazy duke believes them, the poor girl suffers enormously, in addition to being humiliated, she also faces these evils
I so HATE these stories in which female leads ALWAYS freeze and go mute or patter something completely useless – often for hours, which is absurd – instead of clearing up misunderstandings! Even worse: they also nearly ever clear them up later on either *facepalm*
But I also hate people who accuse women of being a whore, selling their bodies or seducing others despite ever seeing or experiencing them doing anything improper – unfortunately this can happen in real life too 🙁
(I wonder how this freckles-guy even recognized the female lead since he couldn’t have ever met her in person before…).
My theory is that the uncle has been forging letters and making promises in her name to get would-be suitors to send him jewelry and dresses that he sold for cash
