Another horrible trope 🙁
Why do authors feel the need to describe these “tests” that show their victims illusions of their “worst nightmare” or “deepest fears” at all? If you think about it, in actual fact for most people this would mean traumatizing or retraumatizing illusions of crippling torture or things that trigger severe phobias…
And let’s be honest: most people would “fail” these “tests” because panic attacks are an automatic reaction to such experiences that cannot be stopped. As are shock reactions like passing out. But this does not mean that they are not “strong” enough, because literally ANY human being will break under merciless torture.
Also, this experience would inevitably stay with most of them as a trauma that can be tiggered anytime again, or it might even evolve into a panic disorder that will prevent them from living a healthy life.
How can it be called a “victory” when the victims resort to murderous violence? Plus to even kill people who do not directly attack?
Isn’t this all rather a method to transform a person into a killing machine with a broken mind?
After all, there are documentations about torturers who were made to accept any inhuman orders by being mentally broken themselves at first.
